Welcome to Manchester AirportOfficially opened on 25 June 1938 and wasinitially known as Ringway Airport. DuringWorld War II it was called RAF Ringway andbecome a hub of wartime engineeringactivity as an aircraft manufacturing base.It was laid out with three new runways andten new hangars.In 1946 peace time operations started andthe passenger numbers started to increasealthough still using the old war timebuildings. In 1962 a newterminal was built to handle the one millionplus passengers, with a further runwayextension to 2745m in 1969.By 1995, 15 million passengers per yearwere using the airport and a new runwaywas added in 2001 to allow for futureexpansion. Today nearly 23 millionpassengers use Manchester.
